How IP geolocation works

Every public IP address is assigned to an organization in blocks by a regional internet registry, and that assignment is recorded in WHOIS. Geolocation providers build their databases by combining that registration data with routing information, ISP-submitted data and real-world signal triangulation, then continuously cross-check it against network measurements. The result is a best estimate, not a GPS reading — there is no protocol that transmits a device's physical coordinates as part of an IP packet.

Where the data comes from

  • Regional registries (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, AFRINIC) — who was allocated the block, and often the country of registration.
  • Reverse DNS (PTR records) — the hostname the network operator points the address back to.
  • ISP-submitted feeds and network measurement — used by geolocation databases to refine city-level estimates over time.

Its limits

City and coordinate fields are the least reliable part of any lookup. Mobile networks route through regional gateways, corporate VPNs exit through a head office, and CDNs anycast the same address to whichever data center is closest to the visitor — none of that is where the requesting device physically sits. Treat country as dependable, region as a good guess, and city as directional at best.

Identifying which hosting provider or cloud region serves a site, auditing server logs for suspicious traffic, confirming a CDN edge is serving from the expected region, and sanity-checking that a domain's mail and web servers are hosted where you expect. What is a reverse IP lookup?

It takes an IP address and returns the hostname, network owner and approximate location associated with it — the opposite direction of a normal DNS lookup, which turns a hostname into an IP.

How accurate is IP geolocation?

Network and ISP information is usually reliable — it comes from registry records. Country and region are a good approximation. City and coordinates are the least reliable part of any IP database and often point to a regional hub rather than an exact location.

Why does my IP show the wrong city?

Geolocation databases map IP address blocks to whichever location their provider registered — often a data center or a regional ISP hub, not the device that's actually using the address. Mobile networks and VPNs make this worse by routing traffic through infrastructure far from the user.

Can an IP lookup identify a specific person?

No. An IP address identifies a network or a device on that network, not a person. Multiple people can share one public IP (a household, an office, a mobile carrier's network), and one person can appear from different IPs as they move networks.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 addresses are the familiar four-number format (like 192.0.2.1) and are a limited, mostly exhausted address space. IPv6 addresses are longer (like 2001:db8::1) and provide a vastly larger address space. Both are looked up the same way here.

Does a VPN change my IP lookup result?

Yes — looking up an address while connected to a VPN or proxy shows the VPN exit server's network and location, not the underlying connection's. This tool reports what the address itself resolves to; it does not attempt to detect or unmask a VPN.
