What a reverse IP lookup actually tells you
Four kinds of information come back from one query — knowing which one you actually need saves you from over-trusting the others.
Network & ISP
Who owns the address block — a cloud provider, ISP or carrier. Registered in WHOIS/RDAP and almost always accurate.
Reverse DNS
The hostname the operator points the address back to — often descriptive of the data center or service behind it.
Country & region
Country is usually right. Region/state is a good approximation, drawn from where the block was registered.
City & coordinates
Often a regional hub rather than a precise location — never treat this as a street address.

How IP geolocation works
Every public IP address is assigned to an organization in blocks by a regional internet registry, and that assignment is recorded in WHOIS. Geolocation providers build their databases by combining that registration data with routing information, ISP-submitted data and real-world signal triangulation, then continuously cross-check it against network measurements. The result is a best estimate, not a GPS reading — there is no protocol that transmits a device's physical coordinates as part of an IP packet.
Where the data comes from
- Regional registries (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, AFRINIC) — who was allocated the block, and often the country of registration.
- Reverse DNS (PTR records) — the hostname the network operator points the address back to.
- ISP-submitted feeds and network measurement — used by geolocation databases to refine city-level estimates over time.
Its limits
City and coordinate fields are the least reliable part of any lookup. Mobile networks route through regional gateways, corporate VPNs exit through a head office, and CDNs anycast the same address to whichever data center is closest to the visitor — none of that is where the requesting device physically sits. Treat country as dependable, region as a good guess, and city as directional at best.

Identifying which hosting provider or cloud region serves a site, auditing server logs for suspicious traffic, confirming a CDN edge is serving from the expected region, and sanity-checking that a domain's mail and web servers are hosted where you expect.
