The modern standardized protocol for registration-data access. It returns structured responses with consistent field names, and is queried first wherever the registry or registration service offers it.

WHOIS

The older lookup system, returning less standardized text. Where a registry or registration service still provides WHOIS data, DomainsMesh may use it as an additional or fallback source.

What you can expect

Registrar, dates, status codes and nameservers are commonly published. Contact details are frequently redacted or replaced by a privacy service, so a lookup will not reliably identify the registrant.

What a WHOIS lookup shows you

A WHOIS lookup returns the public registration record for a domain: whether it is registered, which registrar manages it, what registration dates are recorded, and what public status information is available.

Where RDAP fits

RDAP answers the same questions in a structured format with predictable field names and standard error responses, and is the modern standard for registration-data access. The service that answers depends on the extension, so a registration lookup resolves the appropriate RDAP service for the domain being queried and uses WHOIS data only where it remains supported.

Why some fields are missing

Registries publish different fields, and many registrars redact contact details or substitute a privacy service. A sparse record is normal and does not mean the domain is unregistered — check the status codes and dates rather than the contact block. To see where the name currently points, run a DNS lookup; to check whether a different name is free, use the domain checker.
